Chapter 1: Blue Hair

They always ask you in high school a simple question. How far are you willing to move away from home for college. My answer to the question stays the same, far. I always prayed that I’ll earn a scholarship somewhere far away from my hometown and luckily my prays been answered. Now I’m not saying that my life in my hometown was just terrible, but It was amazing either. You see I was the quiet girl who kept to herself throughout high school. To tell you the truth I was socially awkward and only have a few friends in high school.

They didn’t care where I was going to school and I felt the same. College is my way out of the old me and discovers a new Lillian. The Lillian that I was supposed to be. My parents were actually proud of me getting accepted to the New York University on a full ride academic scholarship. In fact, they might have been more excited about it more than me, but I don’t blame them. They took care of me for eighteen years now it’s time for me to take care of myself and that’s what I plan to do.

I reach over to turn up the radio as I enter the town. Looking over to the GPS it says I still have a ten-minute drive. The campus is in the middle of the town and going by what I read, it’s bigger than my hometown. I’m going to school for my Master of Law. When I was little I always watch Law And Order, Criminal minds, Major Crime, and other shows like that with my mom.

I came interested in it and decided to pursue it as a career. Hell, if this doesn’t work out I can always switch to psychology. I’m one of those people who “People Watch” when I got into high school. Believe it or not, a lot of people does this, getting to know someone by just watching people every another day. Notice that small changes over the week or what they’re about. Some might find that wired, but personally, I don’t I’m just very…observant.

When, I finally pulled into the campus was when my nerves finally kick in. I wonder who’s going to be my roommate and what she is about. If we’ll get along or never speak throughout our college years. I’m anxious about my classes and what level will it be at. Granted I’m smart, but I’m not that smart. I saw a sign pointing freshman to a certain area on campus. I drove until I saw a big table with a sign beneath with Freshman Check-in on it.

“Great,” I said to myself going to find a parking space.

I hop out the car locking it behind me before making my way up to the table. A few people were in front of me so I had to wait. I look around to see a bunch of students roaming the campus. Some with backpacks and some with luggage. I start school tomorrow as of most of the freshman do. They had the orientation last month before my high school graduation. They show us around the campus and to the classrooms, the school have a huge campus. I was glad they got that out of the way so I could just take my time today to get settled in.

“Next!”

I turn back to the table stepping up to the woman. She had long brown hair up into a ponytail with hazel brown eyes. Light fair skin and a friendly smile on her face.

“Hello. Can I get your name?” She asks me.

“Hi, my name is Lillian Johnson,” I told her.

“Ok, just hold own a second.” She told me searching through the files in front of her.

“Here you are, Lillian. Your schedule, dorm number and key, roommate name, a map of the campus, student ID and your lunch card is all in the package. The freshman girl’s dorm is right across the street the first building after the library. I will be your dorm matron and will be having a meeting with you girls tomorrow at nine in the lobby. Refer to the map until you get use to the campus. Enjoy your freshman year.” She told me handing me my package.

“Oh, thanks,” I told her taking the package.

“No problem, see you tomorrow Lillian.” She told me with a smile.

“See you,” I told her before walking away back to my car.

I grab my four bags from my car before making my way to the dorms. I watch out for the library as I search the buildings. I was probably standing in one of the quads of the campus, because of the big space in the middle of these buildings. Students were spread across the green grass some sitting on the ground and some at tables. Some reading and some just chilling before school starts up again. I continue on seeing a sign pointing towards the library.

“Well found the library,” I mumbled to myself.

And like the woman said I found the freshman dorm room. I let out a sigh of relief that I didn’t get lost as I walk into the building. Stepping to the side out the way I open my package to find out what my room number is. Pulling out the papers it read floor two room number two hundred and eight and that my roommate’s name was Mia. Taking the elevator up to the second finding my room, I reach into my package to fetch the key, but the door open then. I look up to see a blue hair girl standing in the doorway. It was up into a bun at the top of her head and she wore gray baggy sweats and a large black t-shirt. It was exactly simpler to what I was wearing, but my was black and white.

“Oops, sorry. You must be Lillian?” She asks me with a smile.

“I am and you must be Mia,” I told her.

“Yep, come on in. I was just going to grab some lunch, but I can wait for you to get done unpacking.” She said motioning me into the room.

“You don’t have to do that, you go ahead,” I told her with a huff.

“That’s fine I rather eat with someone.”

“True.”

I look around to see that she already had her side of the room personalize. A black and purple sheet was laid out across her bed with matching pillows. A light purple carpet was laid out in front of her bed and a black desk sat next to it. Her wall was already covered in photos from her childhood and high school years. Her closet was stuff with her clothes ranging from all kinds of colors. Mia seems like the fun type of person who doesn’t care what anybody thinks about her. I turn back to my bags heaving one onto my bed to start unpacking.

“At least our room will be color coordinated,” I told her pulling out my own purple items.

“Awesome isn’t the color purple magnificent!” Mia exclaimed flopping down on her bed.

I just shook my head with a laugh before getting to work on my bed. Mia waited patiently on her phone as I start to unpack.

“Do you care if I put you own my snapchat?” She asks me.

“Not at all, but I want to see it before you post it,” I told her without turning around to face her.

“Cool. This one I’m about to post is just a picture of you saying my new roommate.”

“That’s fine,” I told her.

“Wait. Do you have a snapchat?” She asks sitting up in her bed.

“No, I do not. In reality, I’ll probably be on yours a lot, so I can just count that as a joint account.” I told her placing my last clothing item in my closet.

“You’re not much of a social person are you?”

“Not really, but I do change that,” I told her with a smile.

“Well, with my help and creativity, I hope we can.”

“What are you here for?” I ask her in curiosity.

“Psychology, you?”

“Law.”

“Cool, ready to eat?” She asks me hopping up from her bed.

“Always,” I told her with a smile.
