Chapter 28: Prom

Rebbeca pulled into the high school parking lot, and into a parking spot. She got out of her car and heard music playing inside the school. As she walked up to the school, Drake and a young girl ran up to her.

“Hey, Beca.”

“Hey. Where are you going?”

“Home. I was helping get stuff ready, lost track of time, and forgot my tux at home.”

“I told you to bring it with you,” the girl said.

“This is my sister, Tiffany Thorne, and this is Rebbeca Stone,” Drake said. Rebbeca and Tiffany shook hands.

“Nice to meet you,” Tiffany said.

“How’s Danny?” Drake asked.

“Good. He’s at his place. Besides, this stuff really isn’t his thing,” Rebbeca replied.

“Cool, I have to go, be right back.” Drake ran across the parking lot to his car. Rebbeca and Tiffany stood in silence, not knowing what to say.

“So, are you here with anyone?” Rebbeca asked.

“Yes, Shawn MaGreen,” she replied.

“How’d you pull that one off?”

They started walking inside.

“We’ve known each other for a while, but we’re just friends.”

“That’s how it starts.”

“So, how long have you known Drake?”

“I’ve known him for as long as I can remember.”

“Does he ever disappear on you?”

“No, why?”

“He just doesn’t seem like he’s fully there.”

“I’ve been wondering that for years,” Rebbeca joked. They both laughed. As they entered the gym, Tiffany saw Shawn.

“I’ll see you later.” She disappeared into the crowd. Rebbeca nodded and started walking through the crowd until she found Abigail.

“Glad you could make it,” Abigail shouted over the music.

“Don’t get your hopes up, I’m not staying long.” She felt someone tap her shoulder, then, turned around and saw Shawn. “Shouldn’t you be with Tiffany?”

“So, I hear you’ve been to Riverstone.”

“I thought you might.”

“What was so important that you had to lie to my dad?”

“It’s a long story,” Rebbeca said. “But I was wondering if you could do something for me?”

“Sure,” he rolled his eyes.

“Find out what ever you can from your dad, about the Habanero family.”

“Why him?”

“I think he knows them…you know, from his days as Spade.”

“Don’t rub it in.”

“Hey, you’re not the only one who knows someone that’s spent half his life as a villain, and then one day decided to change.”

“Well, that’s comforting.”

“Go have fun,” Rebbeca said, smiling. She found Abigail and elbowed her. “I’m going to go.”

“You’ve been here for ten minutes.”

“The party scene is your thing, not mine. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Okay, bye.”

Rebbeca disappeared into the crowd. Drake walked up behind Abigail and wrapped his arms around her.

“Well, it’s about time,” she said. “What took you so long?”

“I had to do something for Danny.”

“Is he okay?”

“Yeah. Everything’s fine, now. Don’t worry about it.” He smiled, taking her hand. A slow song started playing as Rebbeca walked across the dance floor. She looked up just Danny was walking through the front door. She stopped and watched as he walked up to her. “What are you doing here?”

He stood in front of her.

“You’re supposed to be at home, resting.”

“I can rest on the weekend,” he said. “Besides… it only hurts when I breathe.”

“Well, if it’s only when you breathe,” she sighed, rolling her eyes. Danny wrapped his arm around her waist, and took her hand.

“Slowly.”

They started dancing.

“Your strength is amazing to me, Rebbeca,” he said. “I could never have done some of the things you have.”

“Well, I couldn’t have done it without your support. Without you and Drake, I don’t know if I’d be here tonight.”

They continued to slowly dance along with the music. Rebbeca looked up into Danny’s eyes and said, “I love you.”

Danny smiled, as he pulled her into him, pressing their lips together. They both stopped dancing, as Danny drew it out. When he finished, he pulled back and looked into her eyes. He slowly took her hand and then led her out of the building. They walked on the side walk, in front of the school.

“Is this the way it’s always going to be?” Rebbeca asked, as she rested her head on his shoulder.

“What do you mean?”

“This never ending battle with Whitney and Retsacnal.”

“Oh.” Danny stopped, turning to face her. “Whether I’m there or not, you will find a way to stop them. It may not be when you want, but don’t give up.”

“I’m not,” she said. “Too much has happened for me to give up, now. One day, by my hand or not, they will be stopped.”

“And I hope I’m there when you do.”

They smiled at each other, before turning around and walking back to the parking lot. They walked up to Rebbeca’s jeep, as Drake and Abigail walked up to them.

“Hey guys,” Drake said.

“Your dress is really pretty, Rebbeca,” Abigail said.

“Thank you.”

“You look pretty too, Danny,” Drake snickered.

Danny gave him a dirty look. “Shut up.”

“So,” Rebbeca said. “Where are you guys off to?”

“Krispy Kern. They’re open until one because of prom,” Abigail replied. “What about you guys?”

“We haven’t talked about it.” She looked up at Danny.

“You should go with them,” he said. “Besides, I have to meet Whitney.”

“Okay…? You sure?”

“Yeah. It’s fine, go.”

She smiled. “Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow.” She waved and then left with Drake and Abigail.

Later that night, Danny met with Whitney at his house. He let her in, and then sat down on the couch.

“How’d it go?” she asked.

“Good. As usual, she believed every word I said.”

“Good.”

“What next?”

“We’re still working on that. Come in tomorrow, as normal, for your orders. But, for now, just keep her trust.” Whitney walked to the front door.

“Oh, and just so you know,” Danny said, standing. “Your daughter can do more than we thought.”

With her back still turned to him, she looked over her shoulder. “Does she have a weakness?”

“Yes. And it was right in front of us the whole time.”
